Count characters for your tweets in real-time and craft the perfect post. Standard Twitter/X accounts have a 280 character limit per tweet.
Twitter Character Limits
- **Standard accounts:** 280 characters per tweet
- **Twitter Blue/Premium:** Up to 25,000 characters for long-form posts
- **DMs:** 10,000 characters
How Twitter Counts Characters
Twitter has special rules for character counting:
- **URLs:** Always count as 23 characters (t.co shortening)
- **Emojis:** Most count as 2 characters
- **CJK characters:** (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) count as 2 characters
- **Other text:** 1 character each
Writing Better Tweets
Tweets under 100 characters get 17% more engagement on average. Short, punchy tweets with clear value tend to perform better. If you need more space, use a thread.
When You Need More Characters
If you are going over 280, consider using our Twitter Thread Formatter to split your content into a readable thread. Threads often get more engagement than single tweets anyway.
